If your plumbing smells, here’s what you should do

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

Sometimes you might experience a foul odor coming from your kitchen or bathroom plumbing. This awful aroma is likely due to hydrogen sulfide gas, which is produced by bacteria in contaminated water and sewage. It can make daily tasks, such as cooking and cleaning, undesirable, but in fact, eliminating these smells is often easy.

How can you get rid of such scents? Sometimes it’s as easy as disinfecting the problem area or drain cleaning. Here’s what you need to know about stinky plumbing.

THE WATER SUPPLY COULD HAVE BACTERIA

It’s important first to find out if the problem is a contaminated water supply or localized in one drain. To do this, do a few simple tests. Start by filling a cup with cold water from the smelly sink, bringing it outside and taking a whiff.

Next, fill another glass with hot water from the same tap, and smell the water again. Finally, conduct the same tests with water from another sink in your home. If each glass of water had a nasty odor, it’s probably the water supply that’s contaminated.

If you found only the hot water was stinky, the problem may be related to the water heater. If you couldn’t smell anything, it’s possible there are only bacteria in one drain. Now, if you determined your water supply may be contaminated, there are a few solutions.

If your water heater is at fault, it may be due to magnesium in the anode rod reacting to the bacteria. Replacing the rod with an aluminum one and disinfecting the water using hydrogen peroxide should fix this. If all of your home’s water smells funny, and you use well water, it’s possible the pressure tank could be contaminated.

Disinfect the water by adding bleach, at a ratio of one gallon for every 1,000 gallons of water, and it may solve the problem. Cleaning and disinfecting the well itself is also recommended. Water softeners are a common source of contamination, and if this is the predicament, you would need to get a new filter.

THERE MIGHT BE BACTERIA OR SULFUR IN THE PIPES

In instances where the smell is limited to a single sink, a simple drain cleaning may be all that’s required. To eliminate the smell from your kitchen or bathroom, pour half a cup of bleach down the offending drain.

If you don’t want to use bleach, you can pour half a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar and allow the mixture to fizz for a few minutes before rinsing it away.

The smell comes from organic material, like food scraps, loose hairs, and soap, building up in the pipes. As they decompose, they smell awful and gather bacteria.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF IT STILL STINKS?

If none of these solutions work and the problem persists, you should contact a Fort Worth, TX professional plumbing company.

Your local plumber will have the experience to locate the issue and the equipment to resolve simple drain clogs to pipework repairs.

Trust a plumbing professional to do a drain cleaning regularly, and you won’t have to deal with this issue again.

Who handles a plumbing emergency in your rental?

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

Although many people will tell you that buying a home is the best option to save money, this isn’t necessarily true for everyone. What most homeowners don’t tell you is the number of repairs and their cost that they are responsible for.

These repairs can add up and quickly detract from the amount that you believe you are saving. The other thing people don’t tell you is that landlords are responsible for major repairs of the home. This isn’t often discussed because it can eat into their bottom line.

However, it is definitely something to be aware of! We are going to take a look at what a landlord’s responsibility is and if there is a way to make them cover the cost of any major plumbing emergencies. Keep reading for more information!

WHAT DOES A LANDLORD HAVE TO PAY FOR?

If the fact that a landlord has to pay for repairs to the home is surprising think about it like this: you pay rent for a livable shelter.

Typically the landlord makes money by charging more than what the mortgage is or by renting out a property that has no mortgage.

So, you pay the rent to avoid dealing with the major repairs that are associated with the home.

This means that whatever home you rent must be livable, including properly working plumbing, a heat source, and proper electricity. This doesn’t mean that the landlord has to maintain the aesthetics of a home or pay the power bill.

CHOOSING TO RENT OR BUY A HOME

You might be stuck in the middle of renting or buying a home. One of the key differences between the two is the fact that major repairs should be covered by the landlord.

Generally, major repairs are defined in the lease agreement and don’t include smaller plumbing problems like leaky faucets or clogged drain.

Although these aren’t always covered, if an underlying problem is found when that repair is made and the issue ends up being a costly one, the landlord must cover the cost.

LOCAL LAWS & ENFORCING THEM

Every area of the country is different–in fact, every area of your state and county is different! Certain laws may be on the books regarding what a landlord may cover but these may or may not be enforced.

Some places have the ‘right to deduct’ where after ample notice you may cover the repair and have it deducted from the next month’s rent.

However, this isn’t something that should be pursued without proper legal advice. Unfortunately, in many places, renting laws and renter rights aren’t enforced because there isn’t enough manpower to do so.

This means you will have to do research and possibly contact an attorney to help find some middle ground. The last thing you ever want to do is to withhold rent from your landlord. Although it may make sense to handle the problem this way, all this does is give them grounds for eviction!

WHEN IN DOUBT, CALL!

If you believe you are dealing with a plumbing emergency, call your landlord. If you don’t receive a proper and timely response, don’t wait for one.

Call Service Squad for the quick action and worry about the landlord later! Do you have experience with a wild renter’s emergency problem? Share it below in the comments!

Turning your bathroom into a home spa has never been easier!

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

If you go to any big box electronics or hardware store, you are likely to be overwhelmed with the number of ‘smart home’ products available. This trend doesn’t seem like it is going anywhere because it truly does make people’s lives easier.

Unfortunately, picking and choosing which appliances and products match each other and your lifestyle can be difficult. Certain brands are not compatible with others and sometimes the item just doesn’t function as you thought it would. My wife and I were looking to upgrade our lighting and our thermostat to ‘smart’ ones. That’s easy enough, right?

Totally wrong. We bought one brand of lights and a certain brand of a thermostat, both of which were compatible with our phones. We assumed that because they individually worked with our phones that they would work together, as the goal was to save on energy. This was not the case, but the store allowed us to exchange the items for ones that would cooperate.

WHAT IS ‘SMART HOME?’

Depending on how old you are, you might remember a children’s channel that featured a film about a smart house.

This movie came out ages before any technology like it had been produced so it was interesting and scary when the house started to take over their lives.

Luckily, today’s smart homes are simply homes with upgraded appliances that can be controlled and monitored from the homeowner’s smartphone.

There are smart thermostats and air conditioners, smart TVs, refrigerators, and lights. There are also smart products for your bathroom! You wouldn’t think of these products as being helpful in terms of bathroom plumbing, but believe it or not, they make your showering experience one to look forward to every single day!

DIGITAL SHOWERS & THEIR BENEFITS

Your shower probably sees use at least once per day–and that is if you don’t have other family members taking their turns!

A digital shower can easily be programmed to each person’s preferences of both temperature and water pressure.

Actually, a digital shower can be programmed to CHANGE temperature while you are still in it. This is a huge benefit for families with multiple children that take too long while showering or for spouses that struggle to make it to the office on time.

Almost every major plumbing fixture company has its own digital shower and many will have certain options that you can add or leave out. Just remember, that not all digital showers are created equally: some may be overpriced due to name brand recognition and others may cost far less. Do the research and talk with a trusted source to ensure you purchase the best digital shower for your home.

FINDING A NEW SHOWERHEAD

Digital showers are definitely expensive. If you still want to upgrade to a more luxurious bathroom without the major cost, consider replacing your showerhead.

There are plenty of options to choose from including rainfall, chromatherapy, Bluetooth connectivity, and body jets.

Of course, some options will be more expensive than others but you will still have a fantastic and relaxing shower experience every day or night!

CALL THE SERVICE SQUAD

When you’re looking for smart shower products, there is only one plumbing company to call! The Service Squad can help you decide which items best fit your lifestyle and budget, and once purchased, we can easily perform the installation.

Call us with any questions concerning digital showers or your new showerhead! If you’ve learned a thing or two about smart homes and smart shower products, take a minute to share this article with your friends!

Finding the best sink for your home

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

FINDING THE BEST SINK FOR YOUR HOME

When you need to replace a sink, it is unlikely that you will want or even can find the same exact one you had. It’s also unlikely that you’ll find the sink that you want or need after one day of shopping and no research.

If you don’t believe us, search your local plumbing or hardware store’s website–you will quickly see how endless your options are.

This can make it difficult to know what you need and choose from those options. This is why we’re going to give you a quick guide on how to find the best one for your home and budget. Keep reading for more information!

DO THE RESEARCH

Before you begin shopping for your new sink, take some time to figure out exactly what you need and what features you’d like. You will definitely need to know the dimensions, including depth, have an idea about the type of material you want and figure out your budget.

Once you have those items narrowed down, your search will become easier. Actually, the more you can define and refine your search, the better your results will be. When looking for a bathroom sink or a kitchen sink, you will have more than a few options.

Descriptions like self-rimming/drop sinks, undermount, pedestal, and farmhouse will be common phrases and having an idea of what each one means will be quite helpful. Additionally, keep in mind that stainless steel and vitreous china are the two most common materials used for kitchen and bathroom sinks, respectively.

DETERMINING COST

Although the word sink means almost the same to everyone, the types of sinks and their cost vary greatly. When you are shopping for a new sink, you will obviously want it to fit in with the style and decor of your home.

However, you don’t always need to spend thousands of dollars on high-end sinks that will end up being high maintenance. You can often find a great deal on a sink that is a bit more durable yet still stylish simply by opting out of certain features.

Keep in mind that when you purchase a sink you are not always buying the fixtures with it. This means that you should find out beforehand if they are included and save a bit of money if they’re not.

GET TO THE PLUMBING STORE!

Although there are plenty of great deals online, when you are dealing with items that must be installed, it can often be better to deal with a local company. Local plumbing stores can give you a quote on installation as well as list off the more popular sinks.

You may also have some luck negotiating a deal or asking for a discount, leaving more money in your pocket. If you have found the sink you’d like to install but aren’t sure who to call for the job, dial (817) 402-2188 for the Service Squad.

We’d love to install your new sink or give you recommendations on the best way to do so.
We hope you found value in this article–if you did, share it with your friends and family!

Tips on keeping your pipes clear all summer

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

TIPS ON KEEPING YOUR PIPES CLEAR ALL SUMMER

The last thing you want to deal with on a beautiful summer’s day is a frustrating plumbing problem. Pipe repairs can be tedious, expensive, and throw your entire plumbing system out of order until they’re fixed.

Keep your pipes in excellent condition all summer long. Be careful about what you flush down your drain, don’t plant trees close to your sewer pipes, and keep up with routine pipe inspections to prevent damage. By following these tips, your home should stay in great shape all the way until fall.

BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU FLUSH DOWN YOUR DRAIN

If everyone in your family is home for the summer, make sure they’re not harming your drains. It’s essential to only flush natural and compostable items down your sink or shower drain. If not, clogs and buildup occur. Make sure everyone in your house knows what not to flush down the drain, which includes:

  • Hair
  • Soap
  • Paper and feminine products
  • Food waste like banana peels, corn husks, and coffee grounds
  • Cooking oils (fats and grease)

BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU PLANT TREES

If summer means planting new shrubs, be mindful of where they’re placed. Tree roots can grow and reach your sewer pipes. When this occurs, the roots wrap around and crush your pipes. Avoid this by being careful about where you plant new trees. Make sure they are not anywhere near underground lateral sewage lines. Plant trees along the exterior of your property and keep the area above your sewer pipes clear.

SCHEDULE ROUTINE INSPECTIONS

Summer storms wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing system. Keep up with regular pipe inspections and cleanings throughout the summer to help your pipes stay in tip-top shape. A professional from Service Squad Plumbing can inspect your gutters, and keep them free of debris. We also use sewer cameras to inspect your interior pipes and ensure there aren’t any leaks, corrosion, or tree root invasions. Stay on the safe side by keeping up with regular pipe maintenance, so your plumbing system remains in excellent condition all summer long.

3 Signs your home needs to be repiped

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

4 REASONS YOU SHOULD START 2018 OFF WITH A DRAIN CLEANING APPOINTMENT

Repiping is an essential service, especially for older Fort Worth area homes. Facilities constructed before the 1960s likely have plumbing systems made from galvanized steel pipes. Galvanized steel is a major contributor to corrosion in pipelines and lead exposure in Texas water supplies. Keeping your plumbing system safe, healthy, and functional is important to us, so if your home has aging pipes, Service Squad Plumbing can professionally inspect them and offer a reliable solution.

There are many signs that your home needs to be repiped, but three of the most common are:

  • DISCOLORED, RUSTY WATER

When you turn on your faucets, the water flowing from them should be clear. If you’re noticing rusty or dirty water coming out of your fixtures, it’s likely due to pipe corrosion. Sediment and metal in your water can cause health concerns for you and your family, so contact Service Squad Plumbing immediately if your water is discolored.

  • WATER LEAKS

Consistent leaking is another sign that your Burleson area home needs repiping services. These leaks can lead to serious structural damage, mold growth, mildew, poor air quality, and other harmful consequences if they aren’t repaired. Persistent leaks shouldn’t be ignored. Contact Service Squad Plumbing and our skilled repiping experts can efficiently remove your damaged pipes and install new, safe ones in their place.

  • LOW WATER PRESSURE

Another common sign that your pipes need to be replaced is low water pressure. Serious pipe damage can lead to major leaks that greatly reduce your home’s water pressure. Having low water pressure makes maintaining your home’s productivity difficult, but Service Squad Plumbing can help. Our highly trained technicians can quickly locate the problem and customize an effective repiping solution to reliably restore your water pressure.

CONTACT SERVICE SQUAD PLUMBING

If you’re concerned about the condition of your Fort Worth pipes, give us a call or complete our online contact form. We have the skills, equipment, and in-depth experience to professionally repipe your home’s plumbing system. Reach out and let Service Squad Plumbing bring you dependable results and peace of mind.

The perfect solutions to your plumbing problems this end of august

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

Service Squad Plumbing is a family-owned business. We do about 1500 plumbing tests a year and specialize in sewer repairs after foundation work. We have licensed and well-trained plumbers who are ready to solve any of your plumbing issues. Each expert in our team is honest and straightforward – you always receive an upfront, written estimate before our work begins. No hidden fees whatsoever. And lastly, we stay up to date with the latest plumbing technology so we are always one step ahead.

All of this together allows us to provide the perfect solutions to all the plumbing problems of our clients. Here are a few ways how we solved issues our customers were facing just this end of August. Check them out below!

PEDAL SINK INSTALLATION IN THE FORT WORTH AREA

A pedestal sink is about as pure and simple as it gets, emphasizing only two core elements: the water and the basin. This simplicity is what makes pedestal sinks successful as an essential component of any type of bathroom. The pedestal sink is usually only composed of two separate fixtures that are attached during installation. The top part is the lavatory where the faucet is attached and water collects in the basin. The lower portion is the vertical pedestal itself that partially carries the weight of the lavatory, which also gives the sink its name.

the perfect solutions to your plumbing problems this end of august

This particular sink we installed is located in the guest bathroom that our customer was remodeling. The customer had a hard time finding a plumber that could install a pedestal sink. You might be wondering why since they look so simple! Actually, they can be tricky to install and often require the services of a professional (us!).

Measurements have to be accurate and you always have to double-check the holes that you have drilled where the bolts are going in. For instance, we had to make an access point in the wall and create a backing to support the top of the sink. Once that was supported, we connected the bottom. Also, pedestals are quite heavy and often require two people to put together. However, in this project only needed one of our expert plumbers.

INSTALLING A DUAL CLEANOUT TO DETECT SEWER LEAKS IN TEXAS

All the drains in your home are connected to the main sewer line. A leak in this busy conduit can lead to a handful of problems such as unpleasant odors that come out of unexpected places, cracks in the foundation of your home caused by prolonged exposure to leakage, rats suddenly taking a residence the nooks and crannies of your house, and sometimes you may even notice a huge spike in your water bill.

In this project, our client had a sewer leak. We excavated the area where the piping exits the home. Then we cut out some old pipes and installed the double cleanouts so we can perform the sewer leak isolation. This allows us to locate every leak in the system rather than fix one leak at a time.

installing a dual cleanout to detect sewer leaks in texas

When excavating, we have to be careful not to damage any surrounding structures. Unfortunately, the cleanouts were located right beside the concrete sidewalk. We had to remove a few sections of concrete and removed a small tree to access the cleanouts. These are some of the challenges we face on a daily basis and we make sure that we are minimally invasive on the surrounding structures and features while focusing on the project.

Other companies do not offer this kind of quality service. Here at Service Squad Plumbing, you can rest assured that we perform a thorough check throughout your drainage system so you do not have to waste more money on subsequent and unnecessary visits.

DEALING WITH A DETACHED WATER HEATER VENT FOR A HOMEOWNER IN FORT WORTH

dealing with a detached water heater vent for a homeowner in fort worth

In this project, the homeowner recently had a new roof installed. Unfortunately, the water heater vent in their attic was detached during the installation of the new roof, which means carbon monoxide could get into the attic. This poses a huge health risk. Prolonged exposure will lead to carbon monoxide poisoning that causes tissue damage and even death.

Luckily, we got on the job quickly—the vent was easily reattached to the water heater. We had one guy on the project site to work on it. It didn’t take him long to accomplish his task.

Overcoming leaks, damage, and more with excellent plumbing services in the fort worth area

July 24, 2022by adminUncategorized

It’s almost the weekend again—time for us to spend quality time with our loved ones, or maybe even get some R&R on our own. There are plenty of activities in the area to have the perfect weekend. From free yoga classes, concerts, football games, to wine-and-brew festivals, you won’t run out of things to do! You can check out this video for details on these weekend activities so you can plan ahead.

When it comes to plumbing installations, planning ahead is essential. If your plumbing is not designed well, it can lead to a lot of potential problems that can not only burn a hole in your pocket but damage your home or business as well! Whatever issues you are facing, whether it’s leaks or blockages, our team at Service Squad has the expertise, tools, and experience to overcome any of these issues.

Take a look at how we faced our plumbing challenges this week by reading on!

CLEANOUT INSTALLATION IN A FORT WORTH BACKYARD

This week, we got to install another double sewer cleanout in the Fort Worth area. You can learn all about how we install them in our previous blog post.

overcoming leaks, damage, and more with excellent plumbing services in the fort worth area

If you don’t know what cleanouts are for, they are an opening in pipes or sewers. With the way they are designed, we are able to work a plumber’s snake into the pipe in either direction. This helps our team locate leaks in the sewer system and also makes clearing stoppage issues way easier. Thanks to our quality cleanouts, we can locate every leak in the system rather than working on every leak one at a time.

A job like this usually takes around 2 to 4 hours at most.  For this backyard cleanout, the whole project took a day and a half to finish. We spent half a day on the installation, and another day for the city drainage inspector to check our work. Everything went smoothly, and now we can check if there are any leaks in our client’s system!

REPAIRING A FORT WORTH CLIENT’S LEAKING BATHROOM SHOWER DRAIN

A functional shower drain is an important piece in your bathroom as it allows wastewater to drain into the main sewer pipe and it also prevents wastewater from building up in the bathroom itself. Unfortunately, the shower drain in the master bathroom for this client was leaking. We fixed this by putting in a new shower drain. Plus, we had to completely redo the old cast-iron piping under the slab because it was completely corroded.

repairing a fort worth clients leaking bathroom shower drain

Metal pipes will corrode over time and it is important that rotted pipes must be replaced immediately. It’s a complicated process and it could even involve a little excavating to get to the pipes. Extra care must be taken to avoid damaging structural components of the house, particularly the foundation itself.

sewer-repair-bathroom-leak-texas

Once the slab punch was made, the repair took a few hours with 2 guys. Now, our client can shower with ease.

REPAIRING A BROKEN FLAPPER CHAIN FOR A TEXAS HOMEOWNER

Our next client was unable to flush the toilet properly because of a busted flapper chain. This seemingly ordinary part of the toilet is actually critical for the toilet’s function. The chain is part of the component known as the flush valve. It stops the water from draining and make sure that the reservoir is filled properly and only opens up the next time you flush.

repairing a broken flapper chain for a texas homeowner

It only took our plumber around 5 minutes to replace the chain. Here at Service Squad Plumbing, no job is too small or too big for us. We are always ready to help. The kids can now flush the toilet with ease now and won’t have to bother their parents either. That’s a win in all fronts.

So what problem was the client having that they had us do a plumbing test? Simple. They just wanted to find out whether they had any leaks!

The first thing we usually do is to insert the test ball down the piping. Once it has been inserted, we wait to see if the water level drops. If it does, then the homeowner definitely has a leak in the sewer system. A project like this usually takes 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the home. Quick yet very helpful work!

We were able to pull the caps off the cleanout and successfully tested the sewer system for leaks. The day ended with good news, as this customer had passed their plumbing test!

RESOLVING STOPPAGE ISSUES IN FARMER BRANCH AND WATAUGA

Our client was having the worst of luck. They were constantly having stoppage issues in their home!

To find out who (or what) the culprit was, we ran our handy dandy camera down their lines. Our team was able to discover that their old cast iron pipe was completely rotted and disintegrated. To address this, we performed a half slab penetration. First, we tore out all the old cast iron and replaced it with schedule 40 PVC. Aside from that, we also used hangers, bands, and purple primer. Fancy!

In just a day and a half, our team of 1 licensed plumber and 1 apprentice were able to succeed in the job.

Our team then had to deal with another stoppage problem in Watauga, Texas. But instead of accessing the pipes through the soil, we had to make an access point in the sheetrock of their home. We performed a sewer leak isolation and located ALL the leaks in their sewer system. Last but not least, we replaced all the old cast iron pipes they had with schedule 40 PVC. After a day, our client had no more stoppage issues!
